Current EFL research often uses self-report data obtained through questionnaires to measure perceived language knowledge and skills and motivation. However, it appears that the accuracy of the data obtained in this way may be reduced due to differences in the use of the scale by different groups of respondents. In this project, we will investigate differences in the use of scales among Czech lower secondary students in assessing perceived knowledge and skills in English as a foreign language and motivation to learn English as a foreign language in a large-scale questionnaire survey. Furthermore, we will also examine the relationship between these concepts and school and individual characteristics (school, family, peer, and individual factors) and how these relationships may be influenced by differences in scale use. The project focuses on a gap in current research on the paradoxical negative relationship between motivation and student achievement in the context of English as a foreign language research. Project outputs include publications in high-impact, Scopus-listed and other peer-reviewed journals.
