Popis Rigoberto Cortina Gallego (Godella, 1843-Valencia, 1920) is one of the most prolific and active musicians in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century in Valencia. He managed to combine his activity as a church musician with an intense artistic life in the most important theaters of the time, emphasizing both the facets of trombone and viola interpreter, especially those of composer and conductor. He was especially linked to the Real Colegio-Seminario de Corpus Christi of Valencia, institution in whose archive we still retain most of his extensive religious production. Some motets, trisagios and masses stand out in this genre, although by some composition the author is known by the motet "Glory to God in the heights", popularly known as the "Carxofa". More interesting is his musical activity as composer and orchestra conductor at Ruzafa and Princesa theaters in Valencia, where he premiered during the last third of the nineteenth century several of his operatic titles in collaboration with the most outstanding dramatic authors of the moment. We also find some references on his activity as conductor in symphonic concerts organized by the Artistic-Musical Society or even as a teacher in the Conservatory of Valencia. The great musical personality of Rigoberto Cortina and his eagerness in favor of the Valencian music supposed the continuous requirement to form part of several juries in musical contests and other cultural events and, in addition, we know that he was linked to entities so important in the time like the Musical Circle of Valencia or the Society of Spanish Authors, among others.
