Popis | The paper deals with the development of technologies used for documentation and digitisation of watermarks on historical handmade paper. It briefly discusses the most important techniques of recording watermarks according to their main advantages and disadvantages. Description of some modern digitising methods using electromagnetic radiation introduces a special device ATWISE 5242 (Austrian Watermark Imaging System) developed at the Library of Graz University. It is based on near infrared (NIR) thermography which so far to be most effective recording process. During my stay at the Graz University I had the opportunity to use the system in my own research of a surveyed source. Its mixed character composed by manuscript and incunabula allowed me to test the effect of radiation in various conditions. Selected images demonstrate reaction of different inks to near infrared radiation. Incunabula highlights its contrast due to carbon ink, thus proving that the ink mixture impervious radiation and does not facilitate visibility of watermarks. There is a direct relationship between the proportion of carbon in the ink and extent of absorption of radiation by the mixture. Conversely handwritten texts in iron gall ink reduce their visibility and allow easy digitisation of entire motives. The images are an example of innovative recording method even though their usage is limited to texts written in iron gall ink. Overall, it can be assessed that the system ATWISE 5242 has great potential use in digitisation of watermarks on paper sources and improve understanding of manuscript production. |
