Popis This paper brings some modifications of the phonological Hand-Tier model proposed by Sandler (1986, 1987a, 1987b, 1989, 2006) for American Sign Languages. Based on Czech Sign Language data, we refined Sandler’s latest version of the model as follows: (i) we added the features for planes into the handshape category; (ii) we specified the application of the repetition feature; (iii) we added a feature and refined a feature ([back] and [wrist], respectively) within the orientation set of the handshape features; (iv) we removed a redundant feature for the thumb positions ([opposed]); and (v) we redefined the feature [arm] as a complex subcategory by adding a set of orientation features. This work has been initially motivated by the need for variant/synonym distinction during the lemmatization process in the first online Czech Sign Language dictionary (Dictio).
