Popis The paper reflects on the known types of compilations of exegetical comments on the Gospels. By viewing manuscripts as artefacts and as witnesses of scribal practices the emphasis is placed on the layout of the texts, the type of script used, the positioning of ornament, the presence of annotations or lectionary marks, the way text and paratexts are identified, introduced and interrelated in the manuscripts. Such paratextual features are all crucial for understanding the correlation between the Gospel texts and the marginal comments and this paper goals to examine the above from the point of view of aesthetic cognitivism (Graham: 1996; Allen – Royle: 2020). Provided that paratextual features mediate the texts to the readers, the identification, study and interpretation of them may shed light on the cultural context within they were made, on the ways New Testament manuscripts were read, copied and annotated in different places and periods as well as on the influence these paratextual features possibly had on the readers.
