Non-standard problems as a ressource to verifi multiplication understanding in primary school

Popis The paper presents the results of a research focused on understanding of multiplication in primary school. An experiment was carried out simultaneously in Czech Republic and in Italy in two classes with pupils aged 8-9 years. Pupils solved two arithmetic tasks based on rectangular model of multiplication and we analyzed its role as a resource to promote multiplication understanding. Pupils' solutions were analyzed in detail during interviews and submitted worksheets.The results of the research show that suitable tasks can promote the transition from the additive to the multiplicative field.
