Description The paper deals with the phenomenon of translation in modern methods of teaching foreign languages. The work defines pedagogical translation and its position in the context of modern methodological approaches. The research is based on a qualitative analysis of teachers' beliefs and subjective teacher's theories (STT). The findings are then used to generate a research paradigm to analyse the importance and position of translation in a modern classroom by the means of quantitative research. The quantitative research is focused on two groups: students, future teachers and expert teachers. The data gained is compared and analysed using the chi square and bivariate methods, and the results clearly demonstrate that translation, if used wisely in the classroom, might serve as a useful tool for teachers of English.
