Description | Whenever someone tries to offend a child (not only sexually) we immediately have a pregnant term for him – a paedophile. We often warn children against those people, sometimes we even scare them using words like ‘Watch out, that could be a paedophile, he could hurt you!’ Some of those children may later, usually at the beginning of adolescence, realize that they are sexually attracted to underage girls or boys. What do these people feel? How do they cope with the fact that they are paedophiles? Are they dangerous to children? Do they have any opportunity not to view themselves as monsters? Who is a paedophile anyway? What options do paedohiles have? Do we know what struggles they go through? Can we help them? Can we provide any preventive influence to lower the risk they will abuse a child in the future? Can some of them become more dangerous without our help? Are there any preventive programmes for them? Are they sufficient? These are the questions I will try to answer in my paper. In the first part I focus on important facts. In the second part I share experience of people who went through the difficult period of realizing and accepting their sexual attraction to minors without violating any laws or moral standards. Because not all paedophiles abuse children and not everyone who abuses a child is a paedophile. |
