Description Teacher quality is a key determinant of the quality of education. In-service education as a form of teacher professional development support aims at improving teacher quality, ideally at the achievement of expert performance, i.e. excellent reproducible performance of its core tasks. The identification of the nature of expertise and of the characteristics of expert teaching performance, then, is directly linked to the formulation of aims in in-service teacher education. The paper presents results of teacher expertise research (conducted mainly abroad); attention is paid to the cognitive, emotional, and attitudinal dimensions of expertise, specific accent is put on its conative dimension, to expert performance.
