Description In the second half of the 20th century a number of serious political incidents occurred in France, the course of which was obscured, or at least marginalised, by the French government. Amongst those who first revealed this kind of activity were authors of crime novels. This paper analyses the novels by Jean-Patrick Manchette L ’Affaire N Gustro (1971) and Didier Daeninckx Meurtres pour mémoire (1984) and attempts to explain the connections between some of these hushed up historical events and the literary ‘fiction’ which contributed to the eventual revelation of the truth.
