Description | Awareness raising is a central pillar of policy in Internet safety and seeks through educational initiatives and information campaigns to protect and empower children and their families online. The aim of this chapter is first of all to look at the normative level: the rationale and theories underpinning awareness raising; 1) as a tool to inform about risk and potential consequences and 2) as a tool to facilitate a desired behaviour among children, and also their parents and teachers. Using newer research findings from cognitive psychology and neurobiology we will discuss how children make decisions about risk and if and how such decision making processes differs from adults, and what this means for awareness raising and its effectiveness. |
