Description The phase diagrams of the {Ta,V}-Sb systems have been investigated by XRPD, LOM, EPMA, and DTA in closed quartz ampoules up 1050°C, and in sealed Ta crucibles up to 1450°C. The results were compared with the previously established Nb-Sb system. The result from Melnyk et al. was confirmed in this investigation since it is in very good agreement with our investigation. The following binary phases in the Ta-Sb systems: Ta3Sb, Ta5Sb4, and TaSb2 were found to be stable at 900°C. For the V-Sb system, additional binary phases are present and their mechanism of formation is different from that of the {Ta,Nb}-Sb systems. Diffusion couple experiment between V-VSb2 revealed that the following binary phases are stable at 800°C: V3Sb, V3Sb2 (ht), V7.46Sb9, and VSb2. The phase V5Sb4 previously known in the literature was found to be stable below 800°C. In contrast to the {Ta,Nb}-Sb system, only V3Sb, V3Sb2, and VSb2 were found in as cast state, which indicates peritectic formation. The other phases, V7.46Sb9 and V5Sb4, are formed by peritectoid reactions as they are found only in annealed alloys. Thermoelectric properties of {Ta,Nb,V}Sb2 will be discussed.
