Description This paper deals with the hierarchical structure of the Czech public service television from a gender perspective. Theoretically, the paper is framed in feminist media theories and it operates with a horizontal and vertical segregation which causes the gendering of media organisations. Empirically, it is based on the analysis of Czech Television documents and website. The inquiry results in several important findings. In numbers, women prevail over men at journalistic positions. This finding relates to each regional and even to national news desk. However, the situation differed significantly with increasing power – the higher and more prestigious positions in the news desks and consequently in the management. Men dominated these levels and only few women could be found there in all three studios. Moreover, the supreme position of director was never held by a woman in the history of Czech Television Studios, except on a temporary basis. It turned out that Czech Television is segregated not only horizontally but even vertically, so that women and men perform different positions, while positions taken up by men can be seen as more valuable and even more powerful.
