Description | The aim of this book is to introduce current trends in the didactics of foreign languages, represented mainly by the concept of the didactics of multilingualism which is responding to new demands on foreign language learning. In the two opening sections, issues of terminology on the phenomenon of multilingualism as well as the consistency of the didactics of multilingualism with European language policies and with the current state of knowledge in the theory of language acquisition were grasped. In the following section, the approach to learning of foreign lanuguages was described in more detail and anchored within the area of language didactics. Then, two of its concepts were introduced, being the didactics of intercomprehension and the didactics of second foreign language. The latter concept was further exemplifi ed using German as another foreign language after English, as acquired by learners with Czech as their mother tongue. Special attention was paid to the linguistic background of the phenomenon at hand, i.e. the declarative basis of interlanguage transfer, by means of a brief comparative analysis of the language systems of Czech, German and English, with regard to using them in language teaching. This analysis was complemented by several examples of teaching activities supporting the development of language awareness. Finally, there is a brief digression on multilingualism research which presents new, empirically validated knowledge for further development and refi nement of the concept of multilingualism didactics. |
