Description | The establishment of English as the lingua franca of all academic communication has resulted in the necessity to explore the academic writing skills of non-native university students since the ability to produce academic texts in English is absolutely essential for their future academic and professional career. This chapter reports on the results of a survey into the academic writing skills of students of English at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. The aim of the survey, which was based on questionnaires completed by students pursuing both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree study programmes, was to establish tendencies in the development of their academic writing skills. In addition, a corpus-based analysis of students’ diploma theses was carried out in order to map academic writing competencies they had attained by the end of their studies. The results of the investigation suggest implications not only for the (re)design of academic writing courses, but also for the development of students’ language competences. |
