Description | More and more intercultural communication takes place in the language of English. The knowledge of English must be supplemented by the knowledge of context. Since each of us simultaneously participates in many different cultural groups, the context of intercultural communication depends on the situation, the participants and their relationships, rather than on their membership in particular cultural groups. The paper presents methods of English teaching applied in the course of Intercultural Communication. The main objective of the course is to show the students how to adopt English language as a cultural tool for successful intercultural communication. The students learn how their identities and cultural perceptions effect their intercultural communication; they learn to recognize the differences between high and low context situations; they further study the varieties of styles of communication and non-verbal cues and their meanings. The emphasis is given on enhancing the students' communicative competence in order to make their intercultural communication effective. |
