| Description | The article deals with the course of the political crisis and communist coup in February 1948, as it unfolded in the city of Brno. To make these easier to understand, attention is also paid to events occurring in Brno between 1945 and 1948 which had the greatest influence on the political development in the city. The article briefly describes the events after the liberation in 1945, the activities of the four political parties, major Šoffr affair in 1946, the election in that year, and the convention of the Social Democratic Party in Brno in 1947. The course of the February crisis itself is then depicted from the point of view of what was happening at the Brno city hall; the establishment of action committees in Brno region is described as well as the role of Zbrojovka Brno in supplying weapons to people’s militias. The article also includes the valuable memories of two contemporary witnesses. |
