Description | Heavy rainfalls hit several catchments located at the main European watershed between the River Oder (Baltic Sea) and Bečva River (Danube basin, Black Sea) basins on June 24 and 25, 2009. Disastrous floods damaged many settlements in few hours causing number human deaths. Using data from weather radars of the date of this event, a customised flash flood warning procedure was developed identifying risky segments of the rivers in the catchment. The procedure shows different flash flood risk levels on the rivers in pre-defined time periods what is in advance enough to prepare and release early warning. The procedure and its results were verified by the hydrological records at gauges and by witness records. |
