Description | Power as the ability of a person to influence opinions, values, and behaviour of others is main characteristic of educational process. Power relations negotiation is urgent especially for student teachers who know the necessary information of their chosen subjects, but do not know how to meet the conditions of establishing of power relationships in the classroom. We research student teachers during their long-term practice and focus on one of the power bases from French and Raven (1959) typology – coercive power. Coercive power is a student teacher´s ability to influence others’ behavior by punishing them or by creating a perceived threat to do so. Qualitative analysis of videorecordings form classess taught by student teacher Alice reveals typology of coercive power. Types of coercive power are identified in structures defined as scenarios. According to intensity of coercive power usage, we describe strengthening power scenario and weakening power scenario. Subsequently, consequences of different power scenarios are discussed in relation to creating constructive learning environment. |
