| Description | The aim of this chapter is to discover whether there is cross-cultural variation in the use of conjuncts (Quirk et al. 1985), since it is expected that these important text-organizing devices can enhance the interaction and negotiation of meaning between the author(s) of the text and the prospective reader(s). It is assumed that conjuncts as markers of intertextuality foster the interactive and dialogic character of written academic discourse. The research, which has been conducted on two specialized corpora of RAs, one representing Anglo-American academic texts and the other academic texts from Czech discourse community, investigates which semantic relations, such as apposition, contrast/concession, listing and result, tend to be expressed overtly by conjuncts and which semantic classes of conjuncts contribute to the interactive and dialogic character of written academic discourse. |
