Description The number of multiple-birth families has increased dramatically in the last several decades. Raising more than one infant of the same age presents unique challenges to parents especially because communication patterns between mother and infant are dyadic in nature. The purpose of this study is to sumarize the actual state of art in attachment development of multiple-birth children. Bowlby’s attachment theory has been suggested as a valuable theoretical framework for guiding investigations into the nature of the parent-child relationship and later social and emotional adjustment of the child. In attachment research maternal sensitivity is generally regarded as the single most important determinant of infant attachment security (shared environment). In research during the last decade was confirmed that the original concept of sensitivity has lost its privileged position and it should be replaced by a multidimensional approach of parenting antecedents. Attachment theory has failed to explicitly consider how children within the same family may have different attachment relationships to the same parent (nonshared enviroment). Some suggestions about the future research in this field are also mentioned.
