Description After the end of the Cold War, over a hundred armed conflicts raged in dozens of regions of the world. Some of these were known worldwide, and many books, academic articles, and media reports were written about them. But there also existed armed conflicts which captured the world's attention only briefly – if at all – or dragged on so long that they were almost lost to oblivion. Some such similar conflicts are presented in the collaborative monograph that follows, giving descriptive analyses of a few of these "forgotten" conflicts. All the armed conflicts presented in this monograph share one basic characteristic – they have not occurred in areas of extreme geopolitical danger. Moreover, the majority have not experienced direct engagement by world powers; last but not least, they do not illustrate exceptional cases in their intensity or in unprecedented levels of destruction. However, if we take a closer look, we find that their effect on global, regional, and of course local security is not as insignificant as it may seem.
