Citation
Description Primary and secondary school textbooks are subject to an extensive approval procedure in the Czech Republic. After a short introduction to the Czech education system, the article provides a description of jurisdictions and statutory provisions of textbooks approval in the Czech Republic. The authors conducted a critical analysis of the approval procedure based on practical experience of the second author who serves as an authorized textbook reviewer. On an example of three problematic areas (the visuals in textbooks, the selection of textbook reviewers, and the inaccuracies in evaluation forms), the authors highlight difficulties and complications accompanying practical application of textbook approval regulations as declared in the official documents. In the conclusion, consequences for the quality of textbooks are discussed as well as obstacles impeding improvement of the criticized practices.
