Description microRNA(miRNA/miR) is a short noncoding RNA regulating gene expression on posttranscriptional level. The proper regulation by miRNA is essential for broad range of processes in the organism. Hence, the altered expression of miRNAs might be involved in various pathologies. Since 2010 is miRNA one of the important topics studied in the field of epilepsy. Altered miRNA profile seems to be contributing to the development of epilepsy and the disease progression. The accurate identification of miRNA profile of epilepsy and its subtypes would considerably contribute to the diagnostics and treatment of the disease. This presentation was focused on the methodical approaches used in the research of miRNA in epilepsy so far and the improvements in contemporary technologies of miRNA profiling. Recent advance in small RNA library preparation for Illumina sequencing reduces the bias in miRNA profile identification. Nevertheless, the validation by an alternative method is necessary for all miRNA profiling platforms in order to yield precise miRNA profile.
