Description The article focuses on Jakub Jan Ryba‘s notion of music theory and aesthetics, a field so far largely neglected by modern Ryba scholarship. Ryba elaborates on his notion chiefly in his General and Introductory Fundaments of Every Art of Music, the first modernstyle treatise on the subject in Czech language. The other important source is Ryba’s own Jacob Johan Rybas musikalischer Lebenslauf (A Musical Biography of Jakub Jan Ryba). The present article points out various important aspects of the topic and shows the context and specificity of the author’s conception.
