Description This thesis deals with the issue of change of personal identity based on the completion of a long-term foreign study programme. The aim of the thesis is to present personal identity and to demonstrate its characteristic of variability due to life experiences. The paper presents the existence of a relationship between identity and place, and this relationship is explained through the current trend of mobility of individuals. The central part of the thesis is an empirical qualitative study, largely containing elements of biographical design. It investigates whether and how personal identity may change based on the experience of completing a long- term foreign study stay within the European educational programme Erasmus. The results show that the diversity of events and processes along with the change of environment and the students’ rapture with the host country’s culture change elements of their personal identity.
