Description | Karel Vorovka’s book Skepsis and Gnosis. A Philosophical Confession was published at the turn of March and April of 1921 as a compilation of essays with a rigid internal structure. The author, trained in exact science and strict norms of scientific research, adopted a skeptical stance on the power and scope of rationalism. This method, in his opinion, reached its limits in many “vital”, that is, metaphysical questions, and, therefore, should make room for rationally controlled speculation as well as other ways of seeking answers to traditional “philosophical” problems of human existence – intuition, mysticism and religious belief. With this book, Vorovka subscribed to the irrationalist school in Czech philosophy, which balanced the influence of the positivist school dominant in the 1920s. |
