Citation
Description The authorship of the oldest Czech translation of Ovid´s Metamorhoses is connected with Chrudim painter Josef Ceregetti. This fact seems to be symptomatical from many reasons and openes many other questions. First in the narrow context bound with the translator himself, where we can question the function of the manuscript and ask what motivated poor provincial painter to translate Ovid. This example thus openes wider thoughts about role that Ovid´s Metamorphoses played for early modern artists. Which editions were the most popular and which edition was used by Ceregetti? How Ceregetti´s preferences correspond with the wider reception of Ovid´s Metamorphoses in Baroque art?
