Description | Paper pays attention to the hitherto anonymous drawing from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, which can be identified as work of Mattheus Terwesten, an exceptionally successful painter of histories and decorative pieces, active in the first half of the 18th century in The Hague. Moreover this masterful, cursorily executed wash sepia drawing relates to the ephemeral decoration created by Terwesten for the grand-floor part of façade of house of the well-educated and art-loving layer Adriaan van der Mieden at the occasion of the ceremonial baptism of the son of the first hereditary general Stadthoulder of the United Provinces of Netherlands William IV on April 11, 1748. |
