Description This article attempts to provide a theoretical reflection of the role which the media play in politics of securitization. It is based on the assumption that under conditions where the public obtains information on socially significant threats and sources of risk mainly through media content, the success of securitization depends to a large extent on how the media respond to the agenda of securitization actors. After briefly introducing the main theses of the securitization theory and identifying its limits in terms of the possibility for reflection of the role that the media play in political instrumentalization of threats, I try to overcome these limitations with sociological approach to the study of securitization. In the second part of the paper I propose a research agenda which can contribute to understanding the role of the media in the politics of securitization and state exception. The paper also points to the implications of the securitization theory for normative considerations on the media performance when covering security agendas.
