Description The importance of material analysis is currently on the rise in the field of conservation and restoration of cultural heritage objects. Knowledge of material composition and ability to diagnose damage to the objects play a crucial role in development and selection of appropriate processes for their conservation and restoration. Up-to-date material analysis not only meets the strict criteria for accuracy of measurements and validity of obtained information but it also puts emphasis on either entirely uninvasive or the least invasive analysis of the examined object. The paper will discuss two case studies (material examination of pigments from fragments of the Venetian Bible, material examination of metal jewellery from the crypt at the Church of St. Nicolas in Cheb), in which material analysis was carried out by means of electron microscopy (SEM), complemented with component analysis (EDX), Raman micro- spectroscopy, and confocal laser microscopy (CLM).
