Description | One of the major traits of baroque art in Bohemia and Moravia is its receptive character using compositions based on various printed models. In the cycles thematically taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses painters or stucco decorators often accurately followed widespread and very popular illustrations (mainly copies of prints by Virgil Solis, Crispijn de Passe, Antonio Tempesta, Johann Wilhelm Baur and Sébastien Le Clerc - François Chauveau). The choice of Ovidian stories also rarely displays uncommon topics. Therefore, every artwork showing an aberration from the prevailing praxis attracts attention. The paper focuses on rare example of reception of Metamorphoses edition published by Johann Jacob von Sandrart in Nürnberg 1698. This print includes several engravings depicting less frequently visualized stories of Metamorphoses that were followed in stucco decorations in the northern Moravian chauteau in Kravaře. One of the most interesting examples represents the Judgement of Tiresias that serves as case study. |
