| Description | The lecture focuses on Le Corbusier's post-war collaboration with avant-garde composers Iannis Xenakis and Edgard Varese. These music composers focused on developing new characteristics of music through new instruments and sound sources, including electronic media. Edgard Varese earned the nickname "father of electronic music". In the early 1950s, composer Iannis Xenakis worked at Le Corbusier's studio, where he wrote the first major musical piece "Metastasis" at age 32. The composition was created in connection with Xenakis' work at the Philips Pavilion for the World Exhibition in Brussels. The work of the Xenakis-composer inspired Xenakis-architect to create a parallel of his structure in the hyperbolic shape and the material from which the pavilion was built. An interesting fact that relates to the common history of composition and construction is the fact that the pavilion was premiered by Poeme électronique, written by Edgard Varese, who can be considered a direct ancestor and undoubtedly also a significant inspirer of Xenakis' creative method. |
