Description This paper focuses on the concept of lean production and agile manufacturing, and compares these two methodologies from the perspective of added value for the customer, by product type and its lifecycle. It also points to the similarities between these two approaches within the supply chain. Based on these comparisons, a final summary of the results is made. From the results it is clear that only very few companies in the market are purely lean or purely agile. Each of these two methodologies is extreme in a way and is based on a different principle. It is not a new development stage but a different philosophy, different way of business management. Therefore, most companies actually use a hybrid methodology, whether on purpose and with detailed knowledge of lean and agile, or only by using common sense. The knowledge of the methods and their optimization is a big advantage for companies because the supply chain as a process is more significant year by year and a properly functioning supply chain is a major advantage in the market.
