Description Economic growth in India puts an increased pressure on exploitation of natural resources. It also endangers ecosystems on which local communities depend. The objective of the paper is to introduce and discuss aims and methods of environmental movements struggling against such destructive development. The examples are drawn from experiences of the Chipko, Baliapal and Narmada Bachao Andolan movemets, and – in the first place – from the movement fighting for sustaining the Niyamgiri Hills and survival of its Dongria Kondh tribe.
