Citation
Description The book represents an original view on the baroque culture in Bohemia and Moravia. It has been provided through an analysis of three coronations of miraculous images-Madonnas from 1732 and 1736: the Madonna of the Holy Mountain (Sacro Monte) near Příbram (a wooden statuette from the 14th c.), the Madonna of the Holy Hill (Svatý Kopeček) near Olomouc (a stone polychrome embossment from the first third of the 17th c.) and the "St Lucas" icon from the former Augustinian monastery of St Thomas in Brno. Unlike the hitherto interpretations of these monumental baroque festivities, which were presented as church manifestations that show evidence of theatricality, emotionality and the spectacular character of baroque culture, the author of the book uses a historical-anthropological perspective in order to present these festivities (as rituals) as a stage of different ambitions as well as a mirror of crucial thought concepts of Central European society in the 17th and 18th centuries.
