Description The 6th conference Rethinking 20th Century Europe which will take place on 12-13 November 2019, is dedicated to historical milestones, anniversaries, celebrations and significant historical days. The participants will try to capture the phenomenon of milestones and anniversaries from different point of views as well as to reveal causes of their recalling and instrumentalization by various states, groups, ideological movements and individuals. The participants will analyse typical features and contemplate their economic, cultural and social impacts at the conference. The topic may be approached in an interdisciplinary way. We will try to answer the following questions within our two days session: To what extent did milestones and remembrance days influence European 20th century history? What was their purpose? Who (or what) was their cause, “commissioner” and “keeper”? What were they used for? How have rituals and festivities changed during a long period of time and how have changed their purpose? Have milestones had their “second life”? Have they caused anything else? Submissions should be focused on wider ideological phenomenon as well as on particular events. The aim of the presented paper should not be detailed description of regional topics, on contrary it should capture the international significance of the milestones or, at least, describe wider context and comparison. We emphasize the general context – the participants will interpret causes, intentions and after-effects of observed phenomena. It is not necessary to focus only on the well-known milestones as are the “number-8-milestones” in a case of the Czechoslovak history (the years 1918, 1938, 1948 or 1968). The submissions which analyse milestones and movements of minorities are also welcome. The time-frame of the paper is from the beginning of the 20th century to the disintegration of the Eastern bloc.
