Description This study examines railway construction in the Austrian monarchy in the 19th century and its influence in a social and political context. The specialists and ordinary workers who constructed the railways represented a social timebomb in the areas where the railway was being built. The political authorities had justified concerns about their potential dissatisfaction, particularly if they were to join with striking workers, as was the case with the July conflict near Prague in 1844.
