| Description | The research presented in this article addressed teaching culture and developing intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in primary English classes in Prague. It consisted of three parts that included a survey among 73 primary English teachers, interviews with three of them and an analysis of two selected course books (Happy Street 1 New Edition and Chit Chat 1). The aims of the research were to examine teachers’ attitudes towards teaching culture and developing ICC of primary learners, to explore possible strengths and weaknesses of this process and to evaluate cultural aspects presented in the selected course books intended for primary EFL learners. The findings show a discrepancy between the aims that teachers set for their classes and the opportunities to learn they offer to their pupils. It seems that the teachers focus mainly on the cognitive component of ICC, mainly Big-C Culture, which is also present in the analysed course books, although each of them employs a different approach concerning cultural topics. |
