| Description | The text deals with the depiction of the love between the main hero of the short story «Zhena» and his wife. The story, telling about three periods of the development of their relationship, casts doubt on the possibility to maintain love between man, who dreams about freedom and independence, and a woman, who becomes his wife and gives birth to his child. The main hero does not want to subordinate his life to a child, which means for him slavery, and leaves his wife and child. Showing the totally contradictory attitudes of both heroes, M. P. Artsybashev comes in this way in a dialog with the morality of his time, with the common concept of married life and with commonly shared ideas about the continuation of the human race. |
