Description The teaching of regional geography at Czech schools is hit by a long-standing crisis. The polemical contribution wants to identify the main causes of the crisis and to propose various ways out. A discrepancy between the traditional look at regions as containers of information, prevailing in school geography, and the critical look at the regions as social processes is the main cause of the crisis. 0e latter look is typical of the new regional geography, now prevailing in academic geography. As starting points, the text recommends, within academic geography, a clear distinction of the concepts of region, the widening of the teaching of regional geography and its conceptual anchoring in the critical approach of the new regional geography and a search for inspiration abroad, in the disciplines with a similar development, and in existing examples of good practice. Within school geography, taking advantage of the methods arising from pedagogical constructivism, such as dialogic teaching or critical thinking, is recommended. The text highlights a similar philosophical development of geography and pedagogical sciences that opens up opportunities for further ways out of the crisis.
