| Description | Dark tourism – travelling to places that are connected to tragic events or places where a tragedy happened, is getting more and more popular nowadays. The role of popular culture is important and this article is focused on its connection to dark tourism. It is mainly focused on visual culture – films and TV series, where tragic events are displayed and therefore influence the perception of dark tourism sites. Film tourism is concerned with the visual part of culture. That is why a relationship between these two forms of tourism is highlighted in this article. Even though in some cases they can be contradictory, they can also cooperate in some way. The article also deals with displaying death and tragic events in the film industry which is important mainly in films and TV series based on true events. Finally, the article shows how film can have an impact on a dark tourism site – in this case Chernobyl. An increased number of visitors can be viewed as a positive aspect. However, the downsides include the transformation of the site, possibly leading to a shift to the pale side of the dark tourism spectrum. |
