Description | The first part of the chapter introduces the issue of joual, treats the historical emancipation of French-Canadian linguistic usage in relation to the European French norm, and traces the gradual penetration of joual into literature, especially into dramatic works in which orality is applied. The next part of the chapter discusses the possibilities of the stylistic classification of joual within the literary norm, and in this context, points to the specific approach of Michel Tremblay, who conceived this peripheral sociolect as the basis for the creation of a high poetic style. Finally, an excerpt from the prologue of the play Sainte Carmen de la Main (1976) shows how this high style is formed and what strategies, based on the dynamic relationship between the center and the periphery, can be applied in the translation into Czech. |
