Description Smoke-fired  pottery is characterised by the light-coloured core of the shard and usually by a dark grey through black sur- face, which is made by sealing the kiln in the final phase of firing. The technology of smoke-fired  pottery has been used  since the 14th century and in some places it survived until the 1st half of the 20th century. This study summarizes the  results of seven experimental firings  of smoked pottery, which were conducted in the Scientific  Research Centre of the  Department of Archaeology and Museology at Panská Lhota near Jihlava in 2014–2019. The courses of individual firing   processes, including the impact of various types of fuel on the smoke firing  results, were documented and compared. The  research was focused on the properties of fired  pottery and on numerous samples of clays in pure form or with various ad- mixtures. Attention was paid to the selected fuel, the clay body and the highest achieved temperatures. The experimental  firing  has proved the correctness of the technological process and the degree of its variability, which is influenced  by the  choice and strategy of firing, and the type of kiln or fuel. The experiments accentuated the relation between the course of  the firing  process and the quality of fired  clay.
