Description | Death, which occupies an enormous place in human life and thought, was often represented as a living entity. The study deals with the representation of personified Death (The Grim Reaper) in children's literature, especially in albums, where the verbal feature is mixed with the iconic representation and relies on an inherent magical thinking of children. The albums of Kitty Crowther, Anne Herbauts, Michael Stavarić and Dorothee Schwabb, Jürg Schubiger and Susanne Berner, Herman Schulz and Tobias Krejtschi are examined. The realisation does not respect certain conventions, while offering the child space to create additional meanings. The impulses come from the textual and pictorial levels, the latter of which offers a large number of intericonic references. This shift from the informative to the imaginary is a common feature of literature for adults, a fact that ranks many of the books examined among those that resonate positively with adult readers. |
