Description | Abstract: In this article the author explores the reasons for the enormous success of books about adventurer Jan Welzl, in the first half of the 20th century. He compares this literary hero to heroes of historical eposes, in the faith that the success of a particular book “30 Years in the Golden North'' was caused by the attractiveness of a story, so similar to stories of traditional big eposes. In order to analyze this, the author uses narrative and comparative methods of Joseph Campbell. The analysis proves that the story of Jan Welzl has very similar features to aspects of heroic fabled tales from history. The outcome of the article proves the hypotheses about the similarity of the story of Jan Welzl, and the stories of mythological heroes, which seems to be the true reason why the books about Jan Welzl were so warm heartedly welcomed by readers and the public. |
