Description In the article the Latvian word gala ‘meat, flesh’ is discussed from the point of view of its internal structure, derivatives and origin. First its existing etymologies are summarized, than a new solution is offered. The word was included into a set of anatomical terms in several Indo-European branches belonging to the alimentary canal, from ‘throat’ to ‘intestines’.
