Description | Formal undergraduate education is an essential requirement and prerequisite for the professionalization of coaching work, further education and access to professional 62 50 certification programs. Education is critical in shaping future exercise professionals who contribute to improving the health, movement and performance of individuals and communities. The study compares the bachelor’s education of personal and fitness trainers in selected universities in Canada and Norway. We generally identify a striking similarity between the North American and Scandinavian universities. Both universities have an identical number of basic compulsory and optional study subjects. For a specific comparison, we selected professional practice and subjects focusing on biomedical, movement and sports profiles, i.e., a fundamental part of coaching professional management. The primary comparative indicator was the difference in results of the North American university in the number of observed courses in theories of movement demands and science-based courses. The comparison of professional practices in the monitored institutions shows a different number of such focused subjects - four in Canada compared to only one subject in Norway, but in summary, with a very similar time allowance of about 250 hours. Based on global trends, in the coming years, the mentioned issue will require more systematic attention in connection with the refinement of the definition of professional competencies and the regulation of the profession of a sports coach. |
