| Description | The paper deals with reasons why people in modern societies have children. In terms of strict economic utility, having children is not a rational activity. As the main reasons for having them are regarded psychological ones because it seems that children give to parents (and partners) pleasures which satisfy their psychic needs. However, data from international comparative research on value preferences show that the value of children has been changing in the last three decades. It is not dissapearing but it looses its exclusivity for the meaning of life of an invidual. The Czech republic is not an exception from such a trend and that can be seen as the main cause of very low fertility that is recorded here from the mid 1990s. |
