Description The study is focused on influence of the newly emerging ways of transmitting information upon forming style in language. Borders among cultures become more open at present which leads to bringing together stylistic norms created within these cultures. Technical facilitation of producing texts also leads to bringing together style of spoken and written texts. The number of people creating public texts belongning to the sphere of non fiction is growing considerably. On the one hand., the importance of style for presentation of the author of the text is growing, on the other hand the possibility to identify the author by the formal aspects of the particular text is decreasing. In scholarly discussions it is often pointed out that the majority of texts is ambiguous as to their function. Nevertheless, it is not the system of functional stylistics as such, with several functional styles, which should cause doubts, but rather the way this system is frequently used. It is necessary not to treat this system as an absolutely true testimony about reality, but as a tool, which on a general level helps to categorize the reality so that it would be possible to discuss the reality on the level of metalanguage. The other extreme, i.e. the wide increase in the number of general styles, is not suitable, because it implies negation of stylistics as a generalizing scholarly discipline. The new approach towards stylistics should consist in an approach deeper than mere enhancement of the number of functional styles - it should lead to new investigations in their essence. Such approach is still in a preparatory stage, scholarly discussions being its important part. They also reflect the new communicative situation supported by the new media: scholarly communication as a permanent spontaneous discourse.
